Tax Preparation Tips

It's that time of the year again, as if the W-2 wasn't reminder enough. To help make the process a little easier, please see the below list of items to gather for your tax preparation. You don't need to bring every cab receipt from the past year. What you need is a total of all those receipts. Then, if you would like, put them in an Excel spreadsheet, sum the columns, print out the list and staple all the receipts to the list. Do that for all your categories and you'll be good.


  • Wage Statements or W2s
  • Pension/Retirement Income
  • Interest & Dividends
  • Commissions
  • Self-Employed Business Income & Expenses
  • Other Income such as: Jury Duty/Board Of Elections
  • State Refund Amount
  • Social Security/Unemployment Income
  • Purchase of Sale of Residence Records
  • Medical and Dental Expenses (including co-payments & prescriptions)
  • Taxes Paid
  • Charitable Donations
  • Interest Paid
  • Work-Related Expenses
  • Un-reimbursed Employee Expenses (business cards/cell phone use/extra phone line/cable/magazine/business gifts/internet access/ etc.)
  • Education Expenses/Student Loan Interest
  • Lottery or Gambling Winnings
  • Prior Year Tax Preparation Fee
  • Last Year's Tax Return
  • Bank Routing Number and Account Number for Direct Debit or Deposit of the Refund
